We, at Brennan Enterprises, had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with our families and hope you did as well. Hopefully, you have had your fill of turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry dressing, and whatever other traditional dish your family loves to prepare.  If not, well don’t despair… the holiday season is just beginning after all! Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, we can finally start talking holiday decorations.

Some of you may have braved the chilly DFW air this weekend and have already started decking your home with lights. If you haven’t (or even those of you who have), here is something to consider… when decorating for this holiday season, inspect your home’s exterior in the process. What better time to give your home a detailed inspection than when you’re climbing all over it hanging your holiday decorations?!

One of the first things you should inspect are the windows. Make sure you don’t see any signs of deterioration from the interior or the exterior. These can include anything from fogging/condensation on or in between the glass panes, to rotting on the wood surrounding the window, to cracks that create drafts, and many other warning signs as well. For a more detailed list of things to look for, check out this post from the Brennan Enterprises blog. If you see any of these issues on the windows of your home, it’s time to replace them. By replacing your drafty, damaged windows now, your home can be sealed and warm before the winter chill really arrives, therefore saving you money on energy bills in the long run.

Another part of your home’s exterior that should undergo a yearly inspecting is your home’s siding. Look especially for separation in the seams, boards that don’t lay flush against the sides of the house anymore, paint that is chipping, discoloration, gaps in the caulking, or moisture that is accumulating on the inside of your home. If you notice any of these telltale signs of siding failure, don’t hesitate to call a siding replacement expert for their professional assessment of your situation. The siding experts at Brennan will provide you an estimate and help assist you in the repair process, making it as quick and easy as possible for you.

Lastly, make sure to inspect your home’s front door closely for any signs of deterioration. If your front door is wood, check to make sure your door has adequate stain and sealant on it. If there isn’t enough sealant on your door, your wood is in danger of drying out and cracking with the bitter winter weather. Also, be sure to check for drafts around the edges of your door. Make sure that the door closes flush, fitting tightly inside the doorframe. If you happen to notice drafts, fixing them can be a relatively easy do-it-yourself process. Just head up to your local home improvement store and buy some weatherstripping. Lowe’s has provided this helpful tutorial to aid you in installing the new weatherstripping to the inside of your doorframe.
