Pivot Doors - Costs, Configurations and Construction

What is a Pivot Door?

Pivot doors are a growing trend with homeowners. These modern-style doors are colossal and provide a luxurious appeal to any contemporary home. Size plays a huge factor in pricing for a pivot door but types of material do as well.  In this article, you will become familiar with the different styles of pivot doors and the factors that determine pricing:

Pivot Door Styles

Pivot doors come in many sizes and styles.  Pivot doors are created to withstand any size door made out of any material. Giving homeowners the freedom to select any style door they want.

How much do pivot doors cost?

No matter what your style is there is a pivot door that is right for you. Whether you are looking for an affordable or high-end door there’s a door perfect for your home. The price of a pivot door will range anywhere from $3,000 to $20,000.

Every project is different, so no price is the same.  Get a free estimate today from a pivot door provider and get started with your new project now.

How wide is a pivot door?

Pivot doors require heavy-duty hardware for installation. Which means the doors can be as large as the homeowner can imagine.  The size of a standard door is approximately 3 feet wide, 6 feet 8 inches tall, this would cost you roughly $13,000 for a full installation of a wood style door. If you were to select a size of 9 feet wide by 11 feet tall for this door, the cost would increase to a little over $20,000.

What is the best material for a pivot door?

The types and combinations of materials that you can choose from seem limitless.   These materials include wood, marble, glass, metal, etc.  Some example combinations are elegant mahogany wood along with a nice shiny gold plated metal or even a nice steel door with a unique glass design interior.  Prices vary depending on the style for example:

  • $12,000 for a wooden door with a glass interior design with full installation.
  • $5,000 for just a wooden door with a glass interior design for just the door.
  • $2,500-$5,000 for an aluminum door.
  • $1,500 for a standard steel door.
  • $2,500 for a standard fiberglass door.

Do pivot doors open both ways?

Pivot doors can open with an inswing, outswing, or both.  The great thing is that whichever option you choose, it will not affect pricing but keep in mind that the weatherstrip of a pivot door that swings both in and out can cause problems like water and air leakage. Pivot placement is another factor you should consider when selecting the pivot door right for you.  Options include an offset swing and a center swing.  The swing of the door will not affect the cost of your door either.  The pivot placement determines how much access your entryway will have.

How do you install a pivot door?

If you are a DIYer and want to save money you can install the pivot door yourself.  Tools you will need for installation are pivot set, door, chisel, hammer, tape measure, drill, and a screwdriver. The hardware and tools can cost you as low as $450 to as much as $2500, depending on the style and size of the door.  A lot goes into installing a door such as sizing the door, selecting a style, and selecting the right tools and hardware for the project.

New Construction Pivot Doors

According to Angie's List, a steel door installation can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 depending on the size and weight. Fiberglass doors can cost as much as $2,000 for installation.

Replacement Pivot Door Construction

Keep in mind, repair construction of the pivot door can be as much as twice the amount of new construction.  Pivot doors rarely need replacement or repair but if it does happen one or two things may have occurred.  One, the door wasn’t install correctly or cheap and bad hardware was used.   So choosing the right hardware and builder for the pivot door is highly important.  The time it takes you to choose a prominent door design you should also consider taking the same amount of time to review the hardware.  If not you could be long run.
