Texas' wholesale electricity price cap increase means higher energy costs will likely be passed on to consumers. Brennan Enterprises wants to help homeowners combat this increase with a 20% discount on energy efficient windows.
The Texas wholesale electricity price cap is the maximum amount that wholesale electric providers in Texas are allowed to charge their retail electric providers for electricity, which in turn resell the electricity to consumers. Before the increase, the cap was $3,500 per megawatt hour. On August 1st, the cap was increased to $4,500 per megawatt hour. This means that wholesale electricity companies can charge up to 50% more for electricity for retail providers.
This means the increase in electricity prices for the retail electric provides will more than likely be passed onto the consumers. Texas Industrial Energy Consumers, a trade association, estimates that the change could cost retail electric providers up to $4.7 billion.
Some electric providers such as TXU Energy, NRG Energy, and Green Mountain Energy believe the price cap increase is a "change in law" that would enable them to break their fixed rate contracts with customers. And that might not be the end of it. Texas electricity commissioners are considering increasing the cap to $9,000 per megawatt hour by the end of 2013.
