As all of you are aware (hopefully), tax season is abound and ongoing until the 15th! (Unless, of course, you extend your deadline.) What you may not have known (or forgotten) is that Congress reinstated the residential energy tax credits that originally expired in 2011. This means that any energy efficient products previously covered (ie. Energy Star windows, doors, roofing, etc) can still be claimed to its full tax credit - up to $500 on your tax bill.
The small downside is that as of 2006 this is a one-time only claim. For example, if you replaced your windows and claimed your $500 credit back in 2010, you cannot claim an additional credit this year even if you did install new energy efficient products. However, if you didn't claim the full $500 the first time, you can claim the remainder using a separate, qualifying improvement this year. Roofs, insulation, windows and doors, all of these energy efficient products may be eligable for the $500 credit.
