When homeowners are ready to replace the siding on their homes, it’s easy to overlook the importance of trim. We spoke with one of our siding experts, Devon Anderson, and asked him what homeowners should know when choosing trim. Here’s what he had to say:
“There are different thicknesses of trim, most companies use trim that’s less expensive and not as thick as what we order for our jobs. Other companies use a 4/4 board which they put over the siding but with this type of installation, water can find its way into the framing around windows and doors.
We use a 5/4 board which is a thicker trim and trim first around the windows and doors then install the siding so that it bumps up to the trim instead of the window, this creates a cleaner look and it’s less likely to create leaks around the window.
Most people don’t expect trim to be the most expensive part of the job so it’s worth doing right–that’s why we choose the 5/4 board over the 4/4 board for trim.”
