What are Double-Hung Windows?

Considering how long windows have been around you could say double-hung windows are a relatively new invention. Windows with sashes came onto the scene in the 17th century, and it took years for those early single-hung windows to develop into the more common double-hung windows we see today.

Modern double-hung windows have numerous advantages. If you're in need of replacement windows for your home, then double-hung windows are one of the top options.

What are Double-Hung Windows?

The key difference between single-hung windows and double-hung windows is a simple one. Single-hung windows have one moving sash. It's typically on the bottom and opens upward while the window's upper sash is fixed.

Double-hung windows have two sliding sashes. The bottom one opens by sliding upward, and the top one opens by sliding downward. You can open either sash or open both at once for better ventilation.

Hung windows differ from sliding windows because they operate vertically, while sliding windows operate horizontally. Casement and awning windows are also popular styles that are actually completely different in that they operate on a hinged system rather than a sliding one.

Pros and Cons of Double-Hung Windows

There are numerous advantages that lead many homeowners to choose double-hung windows but there are also a couple of potential drawbacks. At the end of the day, the choice comes down to your personal needs and wants. Most homeowners will choose the best product available at a reasonable price and sense price varies by product it's important to consider the pros and cons before you decide which is best for you.

Pro: Improved Air Flow

With two sashes that open, you get greater ventilation and more control over the airflow in your home. On a warm summer day, you can open both sashes at once, allowing a cool breeze to enter through the lower opening, while hot, stale air is expelled through the upper opening.

Pro: Easy Cleaning

On many modern double-hung windows, both sashes tilt inward for easy cleaning. That means you don't have to go outside to wipe down your window glass. You can easily reach and clean the exposed glass on both sides of the window simply by tilting the sash.

Pro: Great for Safety

Pet owners and parents of small children often appreciate the versatility of double-hung windows. You can open the upper sash for ventilation while keeping the lower sash securely closed.

Pro: Classic Look

Double-hung windows have a timeless look that works equally well in a historic home as a new build. Their design is simple, but also highly versatile; you can get custom double-hung windows in a wide range of shapes, sizes, configurations, and materials.

Con: Not the Most Energy Efficiency

Overall, today's double-hung windows are quite efficient but they're certainly not as efficient as a fixed or casement style window which is growing in popularity. If energy performance is your top priority it's helpful to know that efficiency can be improved and maximized by including high-performance glass in the window and a proper installation.

Con: Slightly More Expensive

Double-hung windows are only nominally more expensive than single-hung windows, but they do cost more. The reason for this is that they have more moving parts, and are a bit more complex and costly to make.

Who Sells Double-Hung Windows?

Double-hung windows are some of the most popular windows on the market today. They can match a wide range of architectural styles, and practically all of today's leading window manufacturers include them in their lineup. Consider double-hung windows from one of these trusted brands:
