Bay windows add a simple touch of elegance to an otherwise average room and make those few extra square feet seem like the star of the room. But how can homeowners make use of all that extra space? Furniture and window coverings can be a great solution.

Bay Window Furniture

Bay windows form a crescent moon shape. Therefore, using furniture with circular shapes really accentuate the curvature of the wall. Bay windows are commonly found in kitchens. If this is the case, consider putting in a breakfast nook with a round or oblong table. Another common location for bay windows is the living room; this can be transformed into a cozy reading nook with a comfy chair, some blankets (or Snuggies, depending on your preference) and a few good books. With the mix of natural light and the soothing views of nature outside, this space will quickly become the most popular space in the house.

You could also use the area for extra storage space by putting in a bench. On top of the bench your can place cushions and pillows for an aesthetically pleasing look. The bottom half of the bench can be enclosed with a flip top or cabinet doors, creating ample storage space. For those who are handy with tools, check out the DIY Window Seat Tutorial to learn how to create this yourself.

This video from the OWN network shows how a bay window seat can be used to both furnish your home and create extra storage space.

Bay Window Treatments

A window treatment is the last part of the bay window decorating process. There are alot of different choices when it comes to this area including valances, full drapes, roman shades, shutters, swags, or a combination of those.

Often, when bay windows are found in a kitchen, a valance accompanies them across the top, which may be accentuated by curtains on the outer sides of the window. Fabric “swags” are another option and are draped over the curtain rod in such a way that allows for an arc of fabric to drape slightly below the rod itself.

These Hunter Douglas Duette shades also make for a great look on bay windows. They give you as the homeowner the freedom to easily adjust the shade up and down, creating many looks with the touch of a button.

We end with a southern favorite: old-fashioned wood shutters. This classic look can fit seamlessly into almost any home, regardless of design. The shutters look great in bay windows, especially when there is already alot of room décor. Curtains with prints or colors would make the room look a bit cluttered. Wood shutters on the other hand, are understated, chic, and provide just the right amount of sophistication to any breakfast nook, living area, or reading space.
