Purchasing windows can be a time consuming complicated process. However, it can also be enjoyable and rewarding. I've put together some key determinants to invest time in before making your final decision.
Composition
Vinyl replacement windows are extremely energy efficient, durable by design, are available in a wide array of color options, sizes, and shapes and are virtually maintenance free.
Fiberglass windows provide the highest energy efficiency, are available in a wide array of intense colors, fairly low maintenance but do not come in unlimited sizes and shapes due to their limited amount of time on the market.
Wood windows come in limitless sizes and shapes, require regular maintenance, are a terrific insulator but are not as strong as the vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass windows.
Aluminum windows are 23 times stronger than traditional wood windows, are fairly low maintenance but lack the efficiency of vinyl and fiberglass because of aluminum's tendency to conduct hot and cold temperatures.
Colors, Shapes and Sizes
Vinyl windows can be factory painted or painted after installation. They come in a wide array of shapes to fit almost any application
Fiberglass windows are traditionally factory painted and are limited to certain shapes and sizes.
Singular designs & natural beauty of wood provide limitless options for shapes and colors. Many vendors allow for vinyl or aluminum cladding which can be painted.
Aluminum windows come in select colors such as bronze, black, white and mill finish. These windows can be made to fit most shapes and sizes.
Warranty
Warranties vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Don't forget to inquire with your respected dealer and installer to sit down and discuss your warranty. It's common for glass breakage and labor to be left out of the warranty; ask your installation company if that can be added to your window package. Remember, if you don't ask, the answer is always no!
Energy Standards
Energy efficiency and the green revolution are forever changing the construction and design landscape. Check with Energy Star to ensure your products meet or surpass local standards.
Installation Company
Due diligence is the key. The Better Business Bureau is an ideal start point when looking for contractors and companies that will be inside your home. Angie's List is another online tool many homeowners use to find contractors. Their service is based on a subscription, but is well worth it to find elite contractors in your area.
Timelines
Any company can promise you the world, but sit down with your sales rep and discuss an accurate schedule. Like other projects, discuss a best and worst case scenario so that you're well prepared for any mishap or delay. At the same time, don't expect a miracle. Do you really want an installation job for your entire home to be done in two hours? Be respectful of the process, the timeline and working conditions.
Above all else, make sure you are comfortable with the crew who is going to be installing your windows. Ask to meet them beforehand, and feel free to ask for pictures or locations of their previous jobs. A well-organized, reputable company will have no issues providing these for you.
Take control of the window buying process. Be informed and assertive in your window search. Follow these guidelines and you'll be like the 55,000 satisfied customers of Brennan Enterprises
