Buying Replacement Windows: Things to Know

Summer is quickly arriving in north Texas. Along with sunshine, the kids out of school, and all the Rangers games we love to attend (we're big Texas Rangers fans here at Brennan! Go Rangers!), a Texas summer brings with it HEAT... and lots of it! So many of our customers don't realize just how inefficient their windows are at insulating their home from the hot, intense UV-rays of summer.

With energy efficient glass, a low conduction frame, and proper installation, a homeowner who is upgrading from their builder grade aluminum windows can see an improvement of 50% or more on their electricity bill.

Inspect Your Windows

Now is the perfect time to inspect your windows before the heat of summer really takes hold. While carefully inspecting your windows, here are a few red flags that might signal you need a window replacement.

  • There is a draft around the edges of the window.
  • The window is difficult to open or close.
  • There is an excessive amount of heat or cold being emitted through the glass or around the seal of the window to the house.
  • There is condensation between the glass panes.
  • Too much excessive noise comes in from the outside.
  • There is rotting wood on or just around the windowsill.
  • There are water stains around the window.

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions then it may be time to schedule a window replacement for your home. Don’t worry; it’s not as daunting or expensive of a task as you might be thinking. Here at Brennan Enterprises, we cater to you as the homeowner, understanding that you just want to get the best ‘bang for your buck’ when upgrading your home’s exterior. We offer replacement windows from local companies like NT Window to national companies like Andersen and Certainteed. Replacement windows come in all different materials, styles, and price points so there is bound to be something to not only fit your budget but your style preferences as well.

Window Buying Tips

Some things to consider when purchasing replacement windows for your home:

  • Buying windows is a long-term purchase which will not only keep your family’s living environment comfortable and enjoyable, but can potentially save your money over time if your purchase windows with a low-E glass coating (Energy Star rated for efficiency).
  • Most homeowners choose to purchase new windows for an entire side of their home to keep the style of the home consistent and pleasing to the eye.
  • If you are considering replacing the siding on your home as well, make sure to have the windows installed before the siding. This provides the tightest fit for the windows.
  • Determine what you deem as the most valuable component of your new windows. Does insulation matter most to you? What about durability? Are you most concerned with UV-ray protection? Narrowing down this factor can help you determine what type of window would suit your needs best.
  • What style or orientation would you like your new windows to have? Double hung, horizontal sliders, awning style, casement? This decision is mostly owner’s preference and can help narrow down the field of windows to choose from.
  • Make sure you do your research (as you obviously are right now reading this blog- Good for you!!) You might be overwhelmed with the amount of home improvement companies to choose from living in an area as vast as the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It is important that the company you hire is accredited by the Better Business Bureau for being a reputable, trustworthy business. Angie's List is another online tool that is gaining more popularity. It allows past customers to give their honest reviews of the companies without any hidden agendas. Although Angie’s List is a subscription based service, it is well worth it considering the time and money you could save by hiring a well reviewed contractor versus one that will perform poorly.
