Window boxes can be a great way to add depth and dimension to your windows, making them the focal point of your home. You can fill them full of brightly colored flowers for a vibrant look, or fill them succulents and ferns for a more subtle, low maintenance style. If you love to cook, why not create a mini vegetable or herb garden? Another plus of window boxes is that they occupy a space of the home that is seldom utilized, making them a great choice for homes or apartments that do not have alot of extra space to spare.

This window box is made of a decorative iron frame with a cedar wood planter box placed inside. This allows for versatility, as it can be filled with a floral arrangement in the summer, while the beauty of the box means it can easily stand on its own during the winter months. Alternately, the box could be filled with cold-weather greens such as evergreen branches or cones.

This quick tutorial from FlowerWindowBoxes.com shows how easy it is to install a window box on any surface including siding, stucco, brick, rock, or railings.

When choosing what plants to fill your window box with, it is important to take into consideration how much sun the window recieves. If your window is facing south, drought tolerant plants like succulents may be your best bet since they do not require alot of watering. On the other hand, if your window is in the shade, use plants that do not need alot of sun such as ferns, hostas, or astilbes. You can also add polymer moisture crystals to your garden. These small crystals soak up water and release it back into the soil as it dries out.

Window boxes can also be a great way to spruce up the inside of your home. This wooden window box with sunflowers does a great job of livening up this room while drawing attention to the window.
