Most of us treat the window as a stand alone unit when we are thinking about replacing them. After all, a window is a window, right? We forget that the windows are going to be part of a home with a certain architectural style. Take for example a clean, sleek lookng window with no grilles; it would look great in a modern home but awful in a historic Victorian house. To help homeowners find the windows that match their home's style, Andersen has launched the Home Style Library. Annette Panning, marketing manager at Andersen Windows explains:

"We are showing homeowners the design elements that make up a specific historic period of architecture or style, and guiding them through the choices to create it — window style and placement, grilles, color, interior finishes, hardware options, even the style of front entry. The language and imagery of what that means from Federal to Queen Anne to Prairie."

Let's look at an example. Since we're in Texas, it's safe to say a lot of readers live in a ranch style house. Typically unpretentious, long, and close to the ground, the ranch style house exploded in popularity after World War II.

Window characteristics of this home style include casement or double-hung windows flanking a large picture window. Grilles are often absent in this style, but if grilles are present they are usually horizontal.
