Replacement Windows Checklist

Window Replacement Checklist

Before you start the window replacement process, there are some things you need to check off your list. Some of the things you need to think about are window vendors and brands, and the different window styles, materials, and performance options available to you. In this post you can learn more about the replacement process and all of the things that should be on your window replacement checklist.

This checklist includes:

  • Window Brands and Vendors
  • Window Styles
  • Window Materials
  • Window Performance
  • Window Consultation

Window Brands and Vendors

Every window brand is different. Usually, most brands offer all the same window styles, but one may offer a window style in all colors, while another brand will only offer that style in one color. Before starting your window replacement project, there are a few vendors and brands that you should consider.

Pella:

Pella is a great choice for replacement windows. This brand offers many different window replacement options and styles that can fit any space. Pella is rated #1 in Innovation and Quality by homeowners across the country, and it offers windows on both sides of the price scale, from affordable to more high end windows.

Andersen:

Andersen is another great brand to choose from when replacing your windows. Andersen is one of the most loved window and door brands in the country, and they offer window and door styles fit for any homeowner’s project. Like Pella, Andersen offers affordable options along with more high end options.

Alside:

Alside is becoming a more popular window replacement brand to choose from. Alside specializes in vinyl replacement windows, and offers some different insulated glass packages that meet ENERGY STAR performance requirements. Whether you’re looking for more traditional or contemporary replacement windows, Alside is a great vendor to do business with.

Sierra Pacific:

Finally, Sierra Pacific is another great choice when it comes to picking a window replacement brand. Sierra Pacific has been in the business for 125 years, which means they are one of the leading window companies today. This brand specializes in seed-to-window manufacturing, meaning you only get the best when you order products from Sierra Pacific. Whether you’re looking for vinyl, all-wood, or aluminum windows for your replacement window project, Sierra Pacific has it all.

Window Styles

When it comes to choosing the right window style for your window replacement projects, there are a few different directions you can go. The style of window to go with depends on the architectural style of your home and your personal preferences. Some different window styles to choose from include:

  • Single hung - great for a traditional home
  • Double hung - traditional but customizable
  • Casement - great for a contemporary home
  • Picture or fixed - keep it all contemporary or mix with traditional
  • Awning - usually used in a traditional space, but is great for mixing
  • Sliding or gliding - another great style for mixing
  • Bay or bow - usually found in traditional homes, like Craftsman homes
  • Specialty shape - used with all home styles  as there are many shape options available

Along with the style of the window, you should consider the color options that are available to you. Some brands only offer certain color options, such as all white, which would be important to research if you were looking for a window in all black.

Window Performance

Another thing you need to check off of your replacement window checklist is window performance. Window performance can include factors such as:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Glass
  • Maintenance
  • Security

When it comes to energy efficiency, having ENERGY STAR certified windows is extremely important. Checking this certification before purchasing your windows should definitely be on your list.

Another important window performance factor is the glass. Windows can be double or triple pane, have different types of coating, and can come with different specialty glass options such as safety or tempered glass.

The amount of maintenance a window needs is another important factor when it comes to window performance. Fiberglass windows are one of the strongest windows on the market, and need little-to-no maintenance because of their durability. Vinyl and aluminum are also good materials to choose if you’re looking for a low maintenance window.

Finally, a quality performance window should be very strong and secure. Casement windows are considered the most secure window because they are usually designed to open outward, so they are harder to break into than other windows, such as double hung windows.

There are also a few different locks that you can attach to your windows to make them more secure, such as:

  • Flip locks - most common window lock
  • Locking pins - works best with double hung windows
  • Keyed locks - open and close with a key

Window Consultation

The last item that should be on your replacement window checklist is scheduling a consultation with a window specialist or retailer. This step is the most important, because you will get the most accurate information on brands, materials and pricing from a consultation. They will make sure you are getting the best replacement windows for your space and for your budget.
