Can You Install Windows in the Winter?

Many homeowners consider window installation something that should be done during the summer months. In fact warmer seasons are our busiest throughout the year. After all, homeowners want to get prepared for the colder months way ahead of time.
You can install your windows at any time during the year including in the winter. Depending on where you live your window installers may need to take extra precautions on installation day.
This article will go over some of the problems that may occur if a window installation happens in rainy weather.

Precautions to take when installing windows in the Winter

Replace one window at a time

Most contractors take this precaution because they don't want to allow cold air into your home. If your contractor wants to work at multiple windows at a time, you need to let them know that you prefer they work one at a time to avoid making your home very cold.

Many companies like to send large installation teams for window projects but it isn't necessary. Using small 1-3 man teams can be very efficient.
In fact, this is our standard method as it reduces the likelihood of mistakes. On colder days, working one window at a time also reduces the amount of outside air getting into the home.

Make sure to close doors to prevent cold air from traveling too far in this house. Closing the doors will ensure that most parts of your home are kept warm while the installation process is going on.

Weather concerns

Can windows be installed in rainy weather?

In most cases, most installers will opt to reschedule in the event of rainy weather. However, depending on the severity of the rain, some installers may install windows that are already in a covered area to minimize the chance of water coming in.

Not only is it possible for water to get in through the opening for your window, but the window materials can also be damaged in the process. The integrity of materials such as the insulation and caulking can be damaged from the water seeping in.

Also, the sealant won’t properly seal if there’s too much moisture. So, even if your installers do opt to install windows in rainy weather, the process may have to be completed on two separate days.

It’s likely that your installer will already be aware of the predicted weather conditions and may call you in advance to reschedule.

What about windy weather?

Windy weather can be a less intrusive problem than rainy weather, but windy weather can also warrant your replacement window appointment to be postponed.

When planning to install your windows during winter, you need to work together with your contractor to pick an installation date. Aim for a day with clear and warm weather, this will reduce the likelihood of having to reschedule.

Also consider that the caulk, windows, and other materials will react to the temperature. Make sure to speak to your installer about any concerns.

Final thoughts

Choosing when you install your windows is an important decision you have to make as a homeowner. However, understanding what you need to consider if you choose to install your windows during winter will help you make a better decision. Winter window installation is not necessarily bad or good, it just depends on where you live and what your needs are at the time.
